Fire and Emergency New Zealand is battling a large vegetation fire on Lewis Pass Road this afternoon, with crews responding to the blaze at Island Hills, Hurunui, around 2:30pm.
The fire has spread across approximately five hectares, prompting a major firefighting effort.
Around 40 firefighters are on the scene, supported by 20 Fire and Emergency trucks, tankers, and support vehicles.
Nine helicopters are also assisting in efforts to contain the fire.
As a precaution, nearby houses have been evacuated.
Authorities have also closed State Highway 7 and are urging people to stay away from the area while crews work to bring the fire under control.
Emergency services continue to monitor the situation, with further updates expected as containment efforts progress.
