Kaiapoi Borough School went into lockdown this morning due to an incident involving members of the public.

In a message sent to parents at 11:14 AM, the school said police were on site to manage the situation. “It is vital that parents stay away from school until the lockdown is over,” the message read.

At 11:24 AM, the school confirmed the lockdown had been lifted, saying, “Lockdown at Kaiapoi Borough School is now over and classes have resumed.”

The school explained the lockdown had been initiated at 11 AM due to a conflict between members of the public. “We understand that lockdowns can be stressful for children and their parents.

”We did all we could to help bring this to an end as quickly as possible. The safety of our students is our number one priority, and we will take all measures necessary to keep them safe,” the statement said.

A police spokesperson said officers were called just before 11 AM after reports of two people on the school grounds swearing and yelling.

“Initially, the school was not planning to go into lockdown, but they had brought children indoors as a precaution.

However, the situation escalated, and the school decided to implement a lockdown.

“It appears the two people were involved in a verbal altercation, possibly related to a family harm incident. Police are currently speaking to them,” the spokesperson said.
