A jockey has died after falling while racing at Ashburton racecourse.
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing confirmed Megan Taylor died as a result of a racing incident this afternoon at Ashburton racecourse.
The 26-year-old was riding four-year-old mare Red Orchid, who fell during the 1400m maiden.
Taylor was among four jockeys that fell during the incident.
“These jockeys are being assessed for their injuries, but we understand that these are not life-threatening.”
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing CEO Bruce Sharrock said “our deepest sympathies are with Megan’s family, friends, and others in the racing community who have worked closely with Megan.
We will look to support them in any way possible in the coming days and weeks. We also will support the Jockeys and others who were at the races today”.
In a statement released by police, it said “at 1.30pm, police were called to the Ashburton Racecourse after reports of a person being injured. Sadly, they died at the scene. WorkSafe has been notified. This is a tragic event for the victim’s family. They have expressed that they do not want to be approached by media, and we ask that their wishes be respected. The death will be referred to the Coroner.”
The remaining races at Ashburton were abandoned after the news.
Sending our deepest condolences to family and friends of Megan Taylor who sadly passed after a race fall in NZ, also sending our best to the two other fallen riders. A sad day in racing.
