Jetstar has announced the addition of a third A320 aircraft to its Christchurch-based fleet, signaling a strong commitment to the Garden City and the South Island. This expansion brings Jetstar’s New Zealand fleet to eight aircraft and will support a significant increase in flight capacity for the upcoming summer season.
Starting 15 December, Jetstar will offer daily flights from Christchurch to the Gold Coast and Melbourne, running until the end of January. The additional aircraft also boosts capacity on domestic routes, including a 21% increase in seats on the Auckland schedule, and provides a 35% rise in trans-Tasman seating.
ChristchurchNZ’s Chief Executive Ali Adams said the city’s appeal as a destination for both tourists and businesses continues to grow.
“Christchurch is thriving as both a vibrant destination for visitors and a key hub for business. With our world-class attractions, growing infrastructure, and strong connections to the South Island’s unique natural beauty, it’s no surprise airlines are choosing to expand their offerings here,” Adams said.
Gordon Bevan, General Manager of Aeronautical Development at Christchurch Airport, said the data supports Jetstar’s decision.
“Airlines make decisions based on data, and our numbers show a strong demand for Jetstar’s services. This isn’t just a summer spike – we’re seeing sustained growth in both domestic and international interest in Christchurch as a destination and as the gateway to the South Island,” Bevan said.
The increased flights will not only enhance options for Kiwis travelling to Australia but also boost inbound tourism. Justin Watson, CEO of Christchurch Airport, said the expansion benefits the region’s economy.
“Jetstar expanding its fleet and services here in Christchurch is fantastic news for our local economy. It means better connections, more visitors, and great support for regional businesses, reinforcing Christchurch Airport as the South Island’s key connection point for growth and opportunity,” Watson said.
Jetstar’s Group CEO Stephanie Tully described the expansion as an exciting milestone for the airline.
“With another aircraft arriving in Christchurch on Sunday and four more trans-Tasman routes launching in the next six months, we’re excited to be adding capacity and cementing our role as the leading low fares carrier in the country,” Tully said.
The new aircraft is scheduled to arrive in Christchurch on 15 December, landing at 5.30am as part of a one-off commercial flight from Melbourne. The additional capacity will support a busy summer schedule, providing more opportunities for travel and connection across New Zealand and beyond.
