Houses have been evacuated due to a fire near Lake Pukaki.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said the blaze, which started around 2.30 pm, involved multiple slash piles and scrub.

Fire crews from Twizel, Lake Tekapo, and Omarama responded.

Two helicopters were assisting.

Police were required to help with traffic control on State Highway 8 and SH80.

NZTA said State Highway 80 was closed at the intersection with SH8 near Lake Pukaki this evening. (5.47PM)
