Heavy rain is forecast to hit parts of the South Island this week, with Westland and Buller Districts expected to bear the brunt of the weather from Thursday, prompting warnings for drivers to take extra care on the roads.

The MetService has issued orange heavy rain warnings for both districts, and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is urging motorists to stay alert for flooding, debris, and slips—particularly on key state highways.

“Most significant impacts on the West Coast are expected through the Buller District and over the SH73 alpine passes – Arthur’s to Porters, with smaller amounts of rainfall forecast south of Greymouth that might affect SH6 drivers,” said Moira Whinham, Maintenance Contract Manager for NZTA on the West Coast.

An orange warning for the Westland ranges is in place from late Wednesday through to early Friday. Peak rain rates of 15 to 25mm per hour are expected Thursday afternoon and evening, with totals reaching up to 200mm in some areas. While river levels remain low, the dry ground could result in overflows and surface flooding.

The Buller District faces similar conditions, with the orange heavy rain warning active from Thursday afternoon until 8am Friday. Peak rainfall rates are forecast at 15 to 25mm per hour, with totals also in the 150-200mm range.

Drivers are being urged to keep headlights on, reduce speeds, and drive to the conditions. NZTA is also advising travellers to check for updates on possible road closures, particularly overnight on Thursday, as conditions could change rapidly.

Earlier advisories have also been issued for drivers in the Top of the South. More information is available here: https://www.nzta.govt.nz/media-releases/top-of-the-south-drivers-be-ready-for-bad-weather-driving/
