Westland District: The Westland area is expected to bear the brunt of the weather, with 220 to 260 mm of rain forecasted for the ranges and 70 to 110 mm near the coast. Peak rainfall rates of 15 to 25 mm per hour are anticipated in the ranges on Friday, 23 August.
The Orange rain warning will remain in effect from 4 pm Thursday until 4 pm Friday, urging residents and visitors to take necessary precautions.
Buller District: Similarly, the Buller District is forecasted to experience a period of heavy rain, particularly in the ranges, where 70 to 90 mm of rain is expected. Peak rainfall intensities of 10 to 15 mm per hour are predicted. The Orange rain warning for Buller mirrors that of Westland, remaining in place from 4 pm Thursday to 4 pm Friday.
Wind Watch for Canterbury High Country: In addition to the heavy rainfall, a wind watch has been issued along the entire Main Divide due to strong nor-westerly conditions.
Drivers of high-sided vehicles or those towing trailers are advised to exercise caution and be prepared to pause their journeys if necessary.
Rockfall Risk at Otira Gorge: The NZTA is also monitoring the Rock Shelter area on State Highway 73 (SH73) in Otira Gorge, following recent rockfalls triggered by snowmelt.
On Tuesday, the rockfalls closed SH73 between Arthur’s Pass and Otira for an hour and a half. Crews will continue to monitor the situation overnight, and SH73 could be closed at short notice if further rockfalls occur or if road clearing becomes necessary.
Tresca Forrester, NZTA Journey Manager said “We have crews closely monitoring the conditions, especially in the Otira Gorge area. Thanks to everyone for driving with caution today, tomorrow, and in the coming days as we navigate through this wintry weather.”
