Police have urged motorists across the West Coast to drive carefully and stay informed about road closures and weather warnings as heavy rain brings severe flooding across the region.

A police spokesman said, “Parts of the West Coast area are experiencing intensive flooding, and in some areas there are reports of flooding.”

State Highway 6 has been closed between Hokitika and Makarora, including the Haast Pass, due to flooding.

Police are advising drivers to take alternate routes or consider delaying their travel.

“Please limit yourself to essential travel only and allow for extra time on your journey. Reducing speed, using headlights and windscreen wipers, and watching your visibility will also ensure a safe trip.”

Metservice has issued heavy rain warnings for several districts, with Grey and Buller expecting up to 80mm of rain in the ranges through to the evening.

Heavy rain in Westland is likely to bring as much as 120mm, mostly around the ranges, with rapid river rises, surface flooding, and slips anticipated in affected areas.

Similar rainfall amounts are expected in Canterbury’s headwaters south of Arthur’s Pass, with concerns for slips, surface flooding, and difficult driving conditions across the region.

Authorities are asking residents to clear drains and gutters to prevent additional flooding and to avoid travelling through low-lying areas, where water levels are likely to increase.

Motorists are advised to take extra caution on the roads, as conditions may deteriorate quickly with further rainfall expected throughout the day.
