Health New Zealand has issued a warning after high levels of faecal bacteria were detected in the Waimakariri River, upstream of the Old Highway Bridge North Bank.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said recent rainfall was likely responsible for the contamination.
“Many popular swimming spots in Canterbury could also be affected after heavy rain,” Dr Brunton said. “It’s best to avoid rivers and beaches for at least two days after rain to reduce health risks.”
The water at these sites is unsafe for activities like swimming due to bacteria and pathogens. Eating shellfish from these areas is also unsafe, while fish should be thoroughly cleaned and cooked.
Dr Brunton added that while health effects from exposure to contaminated water are usually minor, diseases such as Hepatitis A or Salmonella are possible.
Details of affected sites are available on Environment Canterbury’s website.
