The Government has launched a new initiative aimed at driving Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption among New Zealand businesses. Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Judith Collins announced the “AI Activator” programme today, describing it as a key step towards unlocking the potential of AI for the country’s economy.

“The AI Activator will provide a range of support to New Zealand businesses, including access to AI research experts, technical assistance, tools, and resources. There will also be options for funding and grants,” said Minister Collins.

She highlighted the significant economic opportunity presented by AI, with predictions that it could contribute $76 billion to New Zealand’s annual GDP by 2038. “It is crucial that we help businesses improve their awareness and uptake of AI, so they can capitalise on the benefits as the rest of the world rapidly adopts this technology.”

In addition to the AI Activator, Minister Collins announced the pilot of GovGPT, a new tool designed to simplify access to government information and support. The AI-powered system will help businesses and individuals interact with government agencies more efficiently.

“GovGPT is an exciting first step towards creating a ‘digital front door,’ where people can conveniently find answers to their questions about government services,” she said.

Both initiatives will be managed by Callaghan Innovation, with funding coming from existing baselines. Minister Collins emphasised that these projects, along with the Government’s broader strategic approach to AI, demonstrate a commitment to maximising the economic value of AI while ensuring its safe and responsible use.

“These efforts show the Government’s dedication to making sure all New Zealanders benefit from the opportunities AI presents,” she added.
