A close friend of the two people killed in a horrific crash on Tunnel Rd, Christchurch, has spoken of the devastating impact of the tragedy, describing it as “an incredibly painful time” for all those involved.

Linwood flatmates Babe Wihongi, 35, and Patrick Anngow, 55, died in the crash involving two cars and a motorcycle on State Highway 74 in Heathcote Valley shortly before midnight on December 30 last year.

The pair were travelling in the same vehicle with their friend, Andy MacFarlane, who miraculously survived the collision.

Alex Greig appeared in the High Court at Christchurch on Friday, facing two charges of manslaughter and three charges of causing injury while driving with excess blood alcohol levels.

The group had been heading toward Lyttelton when the crash occurred.

Following closely behind was their friend, motorcyclist Craig Wilson, who collided with the back of their vehicle.

Long-time friend Jessie Frater spoke of the overwhelming grief their close-knit group has experienced since the tragedy.

“The last year has been an incredibly painful time for close friends of Patrick and Babe, who are still coming to terms with what has happened,” she said.

“Patrick was a very hardworking and caring person, nothing phased him, and he was always helping those he cared about. Babe was a beautiful soul whose smile lit up any room she entered.”

Frater said no outcome in court would bring the justice they sought, as nothing could undo the loss.

“Nothing will ever bring them back, so whether or not the driver who caused this crash is found guilty of manslaughter, it will never bring justice,” she said.

“Hug your loved ones a little closer these holidays. And please stay safe on the roads. No one should ever have to go through what we have all been going through at what should be a happy time of the year.”
