A man faces multiple charges after prompting a police chase that covered much of Christchurch city.
A police spokesman told chrislynchmedia.com around 8pm on Sunday, a vehicle failed to stop for police when signalled to do so on Estuary Road, South Brighton.
The vehicle fled and was spiked on two occasions as it drove through the eastern suburbs, the police spokesman said.
A witness reported seeing “five police cars in quick succession flying down Langdons Road with sirens on.”
At around 8:25 p.m., the vehicle was brought to a halt on Hoani Street, Northcote.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was tasered and arrested, the police spokesman said.
The Papanui Spiritual Centre was placed into lockdown while police apprehended the offender.
A church member said they were having their weekly meeting when they heard “heaps of sirens.”
“Then we realised something was up when we saw all the flashing lights through the big windows facing Harewood Road.”
A police officer instructed the church to go into lockdown.
“We thought it was best to move to another area of the building away from windows.
“Police cars were everywhere, even in our car park.
“We just had a cuppa together and waited for police to advise when we could leave.
“Some people were more affected by the situation than others, but it was a good outcome.”
A 26-year-old man has been remanded in custody and is next due to appear in Christchurch District Court next month facing charges in relation to the incident, along with assault and family harm charges from other recent incidents.
