Firefighters are continuing efforts to contain a large vegetation fire near West Melton, fueled by strong winds.
As first reported by ChrisLynchMedia.com, the fire, located between Kirwee and West Melton, was reported around 9 PM last night. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) Command Unit was established to coordinate operations.
Evacuations initially included a caravan park in The Willows area and later extended to residents east of Thompsons Road to McKays Road. Residents have since been allowed to return home.
FENZ confirmed that firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from reaching any homes. “Crews worked through the night with trucks, tankers, and heavy machinery to hold the fire back,” a spokesperson said.
The fire is currently estimated to cover approximately 100 hectares.
Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area and urging nearby residents to remain vigilant due to lingering smoke.
Meanwhile, firefighters are also tackling a fire at Bridge Hill, reported on Friday, which could take a week to extinguish. Another fire in Kirwee was brought under control on Sunday, though crews remain concerned about the risk of it flaring up again today.
