Firefighters worked through the night to contain a large vegetation fire north of West Melton, preventing it from reaching homes.
Up to 14 crews, supported by trucks, tankers, and heavy machinery, successfully kept the fire from threatening residential properties.
Approximately 50 homes were evacuated shortly after the fire began around 9pm.
Residents were allowed to return around 4am but were advised to stay prepared for a possible evacuation at short notice.
The fire is estimated to cover approximately 100 hectares, although officials said this figure would be updated at first light. Four helicopters will be deployed this morning to assist ground crews in containing the blaze.
Authorities have urged people to avoid the area due to the significant Fire and Emergency presence.
Smoke from the fire may affect homes in the vicinity. People impacted by smoke are advised to:
•Keep windows and doors closed.
•Switch air conditioning to ‘recirculate’ or turn it off.
•Air out their house once the smoke clears.
•Monitor the health of children, older people, and others at risk.
•Keep pets inside with clean water, food, and bedding if possible.
