The Bridge Hill fire remains contained at 980 hectares with a 17-kilometre perimeter, according to a Fire and Emergency spokesperson.
Crews worked today to strengthen structure protection efforts ahead of strong winds forecast for tomorrow. Firefighters also tackled burning piles of slash, windrows, and hotspots to prevent flare-ups.
“There are two potential scenarios tomorrow,” the spokesperson said. “We could see the much-needed rain that’s been forecast, which would help extinguish the fire. But if we get the strong winds without rain, it could lead to flare-ups.”
In preparation, 11 firefighting crews, supported by four tankers, three diggers, and five helicopters, will be on-site. Crews will also monitor the situation overnight to ensure any issues are addressed promptly.
Meanwhile, firefighters in the Hurunui District managed to bring two other significant fires under control earlier today.
Fire and Emergency urged the public to refrain from lighting any fires in the current conditions. “Please do not light any fires when strong winds are forecast,” the spokesperson said.
