Fire and Emergency New Zealand has eased outdoor fire restrictions in parts of Otago, with changes coming into effect from 8am on Thursday 10 April.
The Lakes and Glendhu Bluffs zones have moved from a prohibited to a restricted fire season, meaning residents can now light open-air fires—but only with a permit. Permits can be applied for at checkitsalright.nz.
The fireworks ban in the Lakes zone has also been lifted.
Acting Otago District Manager Craig Geddes said recent weather had helped reduce fire risk across the region.
“Lower temperatures and increased dew over the last fortnight have reduced the fire risk in these areas,” Geddes said. “This means there is less dry vegetation readily available to burn.”
However, Geddes warned that the potential for fire remains, even outside summer.
“Fires can start and spread year-round in our district, so restrictions on fires are still necessary,” he said. “To apply for a fire permit and check the fire risk conditions in your area, go to checkitsalright.nz. You can also find advice on how to conduct controlled burns safely on this website.”
Special risk zones remain in a prohibited fire season, including:
•Queenstown
•Lake Wānaka islands
•Lake Wakatipu islands
•Mt Iron
•Albert Town Reserve
Fire and Emergency urges anyone planning a burn to follow safe fire practices and check current conditions before lighting any fire.
