A fire that broke out in a pine plantation north of Waipara, North Canterbury, on Thursday night has been contained within the forest boundary but continues to burn.
The fire, which covers approximately 80 hectares, was first reported around 8pm.
As of Friday morning, no properties are under threat.
Fire and Emergency crews were still working to control the blaze with five helicopters and three ground crews on site.
An Incident Management Team was established at the Waipara Fire Station to coordinate efforts.
Incident Commander Des Irving said, “incidents like this are a reminder to anyone that has had a controlled burn to ensure they are extinguished, particularly when we are experiencing strong warm winds.
We also ask people to ensure they check the weather conditions prior to burning and contact Fire and Emergency for advice.”
The fire and smoke may be visible from both State Highway 1 and State Highway 7.
Fire and Emergency has asked the public to stay away from the area to allow crews to work quickly and safely.
