Relax, Unwind, and Soak Up the Sun at South Bank

Brisbane’s South Bank is a must-visit, and it’s long been one of my personal favourites. This sprawling riverside precinct offers 15 hectares of lush parklands, winding paths, and beautiful picnic spots, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxed afternoon with a good book.

The centrepiece is the famous Streets Beach, a man-made lagoon that offers a unique inner-city beach experience. Take a dip or just lounge on the sandy shore while taking in unbeatable views of the city skyline.

The South Bank Parklands are also home to a variety of cafes, bars, and casual dining spots, allowing you to refuel while enjoying the scenic riverfront. It’s a great place for a morning coffee or an afternoon refreshment, all while soaking in the relaxed Brisbane vibe. You’ll find plenty of open spaces for families, groups, and solo travellers to spread out and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

See the City from Above: The Wheel of Brisbane

No visit to South Bank is complete without a ride on the iconic Wheel of Brisbane. Rising 60 metres above the ground, this towering Ferris wheel offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city, the river, and the surrounding landscapes. Each enclosed, air-conditioned cabin provides a comfortable and relaxing way to take in the sights, making it perfect for any time of year. As you slowly ascend, you’ll gain a new perspective of Brisbane, from its bustling city centre to the lush greenery that lines the riverbanks.

The Wheel of Brisbane is especially magical at sunset when the city is bathed in golden light, and the twinkling lights of the skyline begin to illuminate. It’s a great way to get your bearings and capture some stunning photos of your trip.

Explore Brisbane’s Riverfront by Boat

For a truly special experience, consider exploring Brisbane from the water. The Brisbane River winds gracefully through the city, offering a unique perspective that you just can’t get from the streets.

One of the best ways to take it all in is aboard a boutique timber vessel, offering a serene evening cruise. Glide along the river’s calm waters as the city lights up around you, revealing a mix of modern high-rises and historic landmarks.

The cruise takes you past some of Brisbane’s most impressive riverfront homes, including multi-million-dollar properties nestled along the banks. You’ll also get to admire iconic sites like the Story Bridge, which looks especially stunning when lit up at night.

Sip Cocktails with a View

Brisbane is also known for its vibrant rooftop bars, offering stunning views of the city skyline while you sip on a perfectly crafted cocktail. Whether you’re starting your night out or winding down after a day of sightseeing, these rooftop spots are the place to be. One popular option is the stylish rooftop at The Terrace in South Bank, where you can enjoy panoramic river views alongside a creative cocktail menu.

Or, head to Fiume Bar at Howard Smith Wharves for a trendy atmosphere with gorgeous views of the Story Bridge. The sunsets here are unbeatable, and the vibrant energy of the riverfront precinct makes it a hotspot for locals and visitors alike. Brisbane’s rooftop scene is all about laid-back luxury, offering the perfect way to toast to your getaway.

Discover the Charm of Brisbane’s Inner City Neighbourhoods

While Brisbane’s city centre has plenty to offer, don’t miss the chance to explore its unique neighbourhoods like Fortitude Valley, where you’ll find Brunswick Street. The outdoor mall sits at the centre of Brisbane’s entertainment scene, extending from the pedestrian-only Brunswick Street Mall, across Ann Street, and into New Farm. Along this lively street, you’ll find a mix of bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops. During the day, it’s a relaxed spot to enjoy a meal or coffee. But at night, the street comes alive. For live music, check out The Fortitude Music Hall, or stop by Black Bear Lodge or Ric’s Bar for local acts. The Press Club is a good option for jazz, while The Empire Hotel, Heya Bar, Our Place, Finn McCool’s, and The Flying Cock add to the nightlife options.

There’s several lanes worth checking out in this area including, Winn Lane, Bakery Lane, and California Lane. They each offer something different. From artisanal baked goods and local boutiques to a laid-back, California vibe, there’s something for everyone. Explore these lanes and enjoy the unique atmosphere they bring to the city.
