Christchurch residents can expect improvements along Innes Road, Mairehau, as the Christchurch City Council initiates repair works and upgrades.
The project, stretching from Mersey Street to Mahars Road, aims to address the road’s poor condition and includes the replacement of a worn-out watermain.
Transport Planning and Delivery Manager Jacob Bradbury said “the road needs total restoration to ensure it meets the needs of users.”
Increased heavy vehicle use since the Northern Motorway opened has further necessitated these repairs.
The work is divided into two stages, allowing one lane of traffic in each direction
On-street parking will be temporarily unavailable.
The first stage on the northern side of Innes Road will continue until mid-March, with the second stage on the southern side scheduled for completion by mid-June.
“We appreciate the community’s patience during this disruptive period,”
The council is also using this opportunity to implement safety improvements.
Enhancements include kerb buildouts at several intersections and new raised platforms at zebra crossings near Mairehau Primary School and St Francis of Assisi School.
Stop signs will be added for better visibility of pedestrians and cyclists.
“This upgrade is crucial for the roughly 15,000 vehicles using this section daily, improving road conditions and safety, especially for students at nearby schools,” Bradbury said.
