A 20-year-old man has been arrested following a fleeing driver incident in Christchurch overnight.

A police spokesperson said at around 12.40am a vehicle failed to stop for police when signalled to do so, on Linwood Avenue.

“Police did not pursue and instead maintained observations on the vehicle as it fled.”

A witness told Chris Lynch Media Police she was nearly “taken out” by the offending vehicle which was driving on the wrong side of the road on QE2 drive, speeding, and with no lights on.

Police successfully deployed road spikes and the vehicle came to a stop in Tedder Avenue, New Brighton.

The occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and were tracked by a police dog and handler.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court today.

Police have not ruled out further arrests in relation to the incident.
