The Hagley Parkrun community and members of Achilles Christchurch united in an extraordinary show of support for much loved local man Mike Asmussen.

Asmussen, a visually impaired athlete, has achieved remarkable milestones in running, completing hundreds of parkruns and participated in numerous marathons, including the New York marathon.

He began running in 2012 to prepare for Outward Bound and later joined Achilles International NZ, which supports athletes with disabilities.

Mike has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, but he continues to inspire others through his courage, determination, and passion for running.

Saturday’s event was a heartfelt tribute to Mike, as participants from Christchurch and beyond came together to celebrate his journey and demonstrate their support.

Mark Boon, a parkrunner and ambassador, reflected on the day as “amazing” and “good for the soul,” capturing the electric atmosphere as Mike crossed the finish line.

“The sea of yellow and blue carried him like a wave approaching the shoreline,” Boon said, describing the community spirit as runners donned the colours symbolising their solidarity with Mike.

The event was much more than a run; it was a deeply emotional gathering for Mike, his family, and the broader community.

“Chants of ‘Be like Mike’ will stay with me as a cherished memory forever,” Boon shared.

“The hugs, high fives, and handshakes at the start set the tone for a day that demonstrated the power of community.”

As Mike’s crew approached the lake, they were greeted by a massive crowd cheering them on to the finish line. “It was a humbling moment to see all the support for Mike,” Boon said.

Boon said “Today demonstrated the power of community—the strength of each other if we unite together for one cause.”

“Running as a pack reminded me why I do this. It energises me. To the point where it feels like you are not running at all—you are simply, and most importantly, alive. In the moment with people you care about and who care for you.

“Today exceeded all expectations,” Boon said. “It filled my parkrun cup and reminded me of the strength of community. Whether in yellow, blue, or another colour, we ran as one. For that hour or so, we were all parkrunners, and that was the most important thing of all.”

“To everyone who came together for Mike, thank you,” Boon said. “It takes a village, and we are so blessed to have each other.”

Mike Asmussen is a well-known figure in Christchurch’s non-profit sector.

As the former manager of Christchurch Community House, he played a pivotal role in overseeing daily operations and ensuring the facility offered affordable office spaces and vital resources to community-focused organisations.
