A Christchurch veterinary clinic is warning dog owners to be vigilant as a surge in canine parvovirus cases spreads across the city.

Avonside Wainoni Vet Clinic said they have treated cases of the highly contagious and life-threatening virus in the past week, affecting not only puppies but also older dogs.

“To everyone’s horror, we are again dealing with a new surge of canine parvovirus in Christchurch, and our area is also affected,” the clinic said in an online post.

Parvovirus primarily affects puppies under six months old, but the clinic said three of the dogs they treated last week were nine months old, and one was as old as 13.

The virus is shed in the faeces of infected dogs and can survive in the environment for extended periods, meaning it remains a risk long after an infected dog has left an area.

Symptoms of parvovirus include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. The clinic warned that not all dogs survive the disease.

Dog owners are urged to check their pet’s vaccination records and ensure they are up to date.

“Check your dog’s vaccination books or give us a call if you need us to check their vaccine status,” the clinic said.

Canine parvovirus is highly preventable with vaccinations, and experts recommend all dog owners take immediate action to protect their pets.
