Christchurch is preparing to mark Unity Week, a powerful initiative aimed at bringing communities together to reflect on the lessons of the March 15 terror attacks.
Born from the resilience shown in the aftermath of the 2019 tragedy, Unity Week has become an annual event that encourages conversation, remembrance, and action toward a more unified country.
This year’s programme, organised by Sakinah Community Trust, includes discussions on national security, a symbolic peace walk, and cultural showcases.
The week begins with the Unity conference, a gathering of leaders and security experts exploring the question, “Are we safer?” Hosted at the Multicultural Recreation & Community Centre, the discussion will examine how New Zealand can balance security with fostering a society where all cultures, beliefs, and identities feel valued.
The importance of community connection will take centre stage the following day with the Peace Train event in the Botanic Gardens. Gifted by the Yusuf Islam Foundation (formerly Cat Stevens) in recognition of Christchurch’s response to the attacks, the train will carry families along the Ōtākaro-Avon River.
The Walk the Talk for Unity will see people from all backgrounds come together for a symbolic march from the Bridge of Remembrance to the Multicultural Recreation & Community Centre.
Dr. Maysoon Salama, a Christchurch author and community leader, will also contribute to the week’s message of resilience with the launch of her book, The Heavenly Papa Giraffe. The story follows a baby giraffe navigating grief after losing a loved one, a narrative that speaks to themes of loss, love, and community healing.
Cultural expressions of unity will also be on display through events such as HeARTs in Unity, an exhibition that brings together treasures from different cultures to share their histories and traditions.
Another moving project, 51 Threads – Stitching Stories, will use calligraphy and embroidery to commemorate the victims of the attacks. Some of the pieces have been created by those who lost loved ones in 2019, offering a deeply personal and reflective form of remembrance.
