A teenager has recounted his frightening ordeal after allegedly being carjacked in Avondale, Christchurch.

The robbery took place on Portsmouth Street at about 8.50pm on Saturday night.

The victim, who chrislynchmedia.com has agreed not to name, said the incident has left him shaken, with the events replaying in his mind.

“On Saturday night, I went for a drive by myself in my friend’s manual Suzuki Swift. I only just obtained my full license, so I wanted to get more comfortable driving manual before getting my own manual transmission car.

“I drove from Ferrymead to Pak’nSave Wainoni to get myself a drink. I pulled over at the corner of Wainoni Road and Portsmouth Street, just scrolling on my phone and watching TikTok videos to chill before going into the supermarket.

“While doing so, I noticed people walking towards me on the opposite side of the road but didn’t think anything of it. About 30 seconds later, the car door opened, and an older guy jumped into the front passenger seat, telling me, ‘Get out of the fucking car and give me all your stuff, or I will stab you with these fucking scissors.’

“There were two people – the one who immediately jumped into the car and one by the driver’s side window, so I was somewhat cornered.

“He tried to take all my stuff, including my wallet with all my IDs, bank cards, my car key, my phone, and my vape. The only thing I managed to get away with was my phone. I pushed his arm back, unbuckled my seatbelt, and opened the door, and the guy outside by the window moved out of the way. I knew if I lost my phone, it would be a bigger loss than a wallet with a few cards and a vape, so I decided I’d try my hardest to keep it.

“After I exited the vehicle, I immediately called 111, and while it was ringing, they sped off, doing a big burnout down Portsmouth St. I stayed on the phone with the police until an officer picked me up from Pak n Save about five minutes later.

The victim said the man who jumped into the passenger seat was possibly “Māori, around 5ft8 to 6ft tall, with stubble facial hair, buzzed hair on top, wearing a black hoodie with white writing and windbreaker pants. He appeared to be in his late 20s to early 30s.”

“The guy to the right, outside the window, was a mix of Māori and Pākehā, looked about 19 to 25, wearing a black hoodie with small white writing, black hair, and no facial hair.

“I’m pretty pissed off that all my stuff is gone – my whole wallet, cards, IDs, everything. I got the wallet back when the car was recovered, but it was literally empty.”

A police spokesman said the vehicle was found on St Martins Road around 3pm on Sunday.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is encouraged to update police online or call 105, quoting reference number 241103/4782.
