A Christchurch resident has raised concerns over the audacious nature of youth crime in the city after her partner caught offenders attempting to steal his truck.
At 9:30 PM on Wednesday, the resident said her flatmates heard suspicious voices coming from Riverton Terrace in Halswell.
“My partner then heard his truck start and drive off. He grabbed my car keys and took my car to chase them.
“He managed to track them down on Halswell Junction Road, where they were recklessly speeding at easily 100 km/h.
“When he saw their dangerous driving, he backed off and decided to return home. On his way back down Halswell Junction Road, he saw the truck abandoned on the side of the road with all the doors open, lights on, and engine running.
“He pulled over behind the truck, only for a convoy of Toyota Aqua cars to stop beside him, yelling and threatening him.
“They then hurled a knife or a very heavy sharp object at my car, narrowly missing the window and leaving a dent.
“That’s when he decided to escape the situation and drive around the block before returning home. All of our flatmates then drove down to where the truck was and found it gutted inside, with nothing in the gloveboxes, radars stolen, and multiple other items missing.”
It wasn’t the only vehicle theft last night. Residents told chrislynchmedia.com multiple cars were either smashed or stolen in the area overnight.
A police spokeswoman confirmed police received a report after a vehicle had been stolen on Riverton Terrace.
“The owner attempted to follow the vehicle but was unsuccessful.
“However, the owner subsequently located the vehicle abandoned on Halswell Junction Road, with the ignition pulled and window broken.”
Police are actively investigating the matter.
