Christchurch Police are investigating reports of a man approaching schoolgirls and other young people in the Papanui and Casebrook areas over the past month.

A police spokesperson said, “We are actively investigating these reports and encourage anyone with information to come forward. Public safety is our priority, and we urge people to remain cautious and report any suspicious behaviour.”

Police are conducting active enquiries into the incidents, including reviewing CCTV footage from the areas mentioned in the reports.

Authorities are reminding the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 111 immediately.

In an email headed “Community Safety Notice” sent to parents, Papanui High School Principal Robert Gilbert said, “We have been made aware of an individual who has been acting inappropriately towards people in our community in the area around our school after hours.

“While we do not want to cause alarm, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take extra care when moving around the school and surrounding areas, particularly after dark. Here are a few safety tips: walk in pairs or small groups whenever possible, stay in well-lit areas, and be aware of your surroundings.

“If you notice any suspicious activity, please report it directly to the police. Safety is our top priority, and we appreciate your support in sharing this message,” Gilbert said.

Casebrook Intermediate School management emailed parents saying, “In conjunction with the local police, we have been made aware of a male on a bike approaching members of the public in the area and making them feel uncomfortable. The safety of our students is our priority.

“While we do not want to cause alarm, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take extra care when moving around the school and surrounding areas.

“We will have staff members present after school. We have also encouraged students to walk home on footpaths rather than cutting through parks, with a friend or in groups. Please reinforce with your child that if they feel unsafe, they can use their phone to dial 111, even without phone credit. Thank you for your ongoing support in looking out for one another.”

Police have not provided any details about the man’s appearance. When questioned by chrislynchmedia.com, a police spokeswoman said, “At this stage, police do not have a reliable description of the individual. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Police by calling 105 or online at police.govt.nz/use-105, selecting “Update Report” and referencing file number 240813/5295.
