Christchurch Police have arrested a 50-year-old man in connection with a series of alleged shoplifting incidents that have impacted local businesses.
The man is currently facing 22 charges related to shoplifting, and investigations are ongoing into several other incidents, with further charges likely to follow.
Metro Area Response Manager Inspector Leairne Dow said that the police are committed to addressing the impact such offences have on the community.
“Police acknowledge the impact this offending has on local businesses, and through reporting from our business community, we have been able to investigate and put someone before the courts,” Inspector Dow said.
She said that shoplifting, whether conducted by individuals or groups, will not be tolerated.
Retailers are encouraged to report any suspicious activities, which could include shoppers spending excessive time observing staff or security measures, frequenting the store without making purchases, multiple people using dressing rooms simultaneously, or individuals wearing bulky clothing or carrying large bags that could be used to conceal stolen items.
To help prevent shoplifting, police suggest retailers use security tags on high-value items, anti-theft cables, or locked cabinets. Installing CCTV is also recommended as a deterrent, as it increases the likelihood of offenders being caught.
Reports and CCTV footage can be submitted through Auror, a system dedicated to aiding police in investigating retail-related offences.
The arrested man is due to reappear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday, 13 September.
