The popular Riccarton House and Bush Farmers Market has been forced to reduce its opening hours following complaints from residents.

The market had sought Christchurch City Council approval to continue operating until 1pm on Saturdays.

However, the local residents association argued that the market had grown too large for the area.

In a statement published on Tuesday night, the market said, “We are very privileged to operate the Christchurch Farmers Market in the stunning grounds of Riccarton House & Bush, a Heritage 1 listed property with significant value to Canterbury. With this comes the responsibility to ensure the grounds, property, and community are respected for future generations.

“You might be aware that we recently underwent a resource consent review to maintain our ability to hold this special market event each weekend at this property. This process is now complete, and we can share the outcome and our way forward.

“Starting from Saturday, 6 July, our new market hours will be 9:00am to 12noon, reducing from our usual 1:00pm closing time.

“We know that change can be tricky, but please know that we are always striving to make the market experience even better for you while respecting the beautiful venue we use each week.

“Thank you for your understanding and support. We look forward to seeing you at future markets, supporting our 50 small business traders.”
