Christchurch Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) has reported significant strain today, with large numbers of people seeking medical care.

Hospital officials have urged residents to consider alternative healthcare options for non-life-threatening issues to alleviate pressure on the ED.

A spokesperson for Christchurch Hospital said those experiencing severe or life-threatening symptoms should continue to seek immediate care at the ED or call 111 for an ambulance.

However, for less urgent medical concerns, the public is encouraged to explore other avenues of care.

“If you are uncertain about the severity of your or your loved one’s condition, Healthline is available at 0800 611 116, offering free health advice 24/7. They can guide you on the best course of action,” the spokesperson said.

Common viral illnesses, which have been prevalent in the community, can often be managed at home with adequate rest, fluids, and paracetamol. Local pharmacists are also available to provide health advice, and residents can check Healthpoint to find which pharmacies are open today. Additionally, the Riccarton Clinic and 24-Hour Surgery are open to handle urgent but non-emergency cases.

At Christchurch Hospital, patients are assessed based on the urgency of their condition shortly after arrival.

Those with non-urgent conditions should be prepared for extended wait times as medical staff prioritise emergency cases.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during this busy period,” the spokesperson added.

For those in rural areas, including Ashburton, the new telehealth service, Ka Ora, offers virtual appointments with clinicians on the same day. This service can be accessed by calling 0800 252 672, though fees may apply.

In non-emergency situations, the public is encouraged to consider virtual telehealth consultations with registered New Zealand health practitioners through Healthify’s platform. Healthify and Healthpoint provide comprehensive online resources, including information on common conditions, where to access care, and mental wellbeing support.

Christchurch Hospital reminded residents that in cases of medical emergencies, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, or sudden weakness, they should not hesitate to call 111 immediately.
