The family of Matthew “Mattie” Mitchell is facing the heartbreaking task of bringing their son home to New Zealand after his sudden passing in Whistler, Canada.

The 22-year-old Christchurch man died on January 23 following a medical incident.

Mitchell’s parents, Julie and Cam, and his younger brother, Alex, are currently in Canada, dealing with the complex and costly process of repatriation.

A full autopsy is set to be conducted in Vancouver to determine the cause of his death.

A Givealittle page has been set up to support the family with the legal, logistical, and financial challenges involved in returning Mitchell to New Zealand.

The fundraiser was created by Lisa Brignull, who worked alongside Mitchell for years at F45 Ferrymead.

“I had the privilege of watching him grow from a shy boy into a confident, inspiring young man,” Brignull said.

“Mattie was truly one of a kind. His infectious laugh, kind heart, and ability to uplift others made him special.”

He worked as an F45 coach and was a talented gymnast who mentored young athletes.

“He even ran a marathon without training for it,” the fundraiser said. “Mattie believed in pushing boundaries and living life to the fullest.”

The page describes him as someone who “adored his family” and often spoke highly of his parents and younger brother.

“His passing has left an unimaginable void in the lives of everyone who knew and loved him.”

The money raised will go toward covering legal and embassy fees, the full autopsy in Vancouver, funeral home services, flights for his family, and funeral expenses in New Zealand.

In a statement, the Christchurch School of Gymnastics said “it is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Mathew Mitchell. Mathew, at just 22 years old was a valued member of our team both as an athlete and a coach, his loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Mathew was in Canada at the time of his passing, and his family are now with him. To support them in bringing Mathew home, a Give a little page has been set up. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
