A Christchurch cyclist is fed up with red-light runners and is calling on transport authorities to do more to stop them.

Alan Burns said “many drivers in Christchurch blatantly ignore the road code rules and drive through red lights.”

He said “hundreds if not thousands are doing it every day all over Christchurch.”

“Police can’t do anything because they don’t have enough resources, but the Christchurch City Council could put red light cameras at all intersections to catch people.”

Burns said “NZTA should put cameras at intersections they control, but they don’t which means the road to zero campaign is nothing but a big joke.”

He said “a yellow signal means stop unless you are so close to the intersection that you can’t stop safely. It indicates that the lights will soon turn red. It doesn’t mean go faster.

The drivers in Christchurch blatantly ignore what the road code says and drive through red lights.”

In April the Christchurch City Council installed red-light safety cameras at two high-risk intersections, Manchester Street/Pilgrim Place/Moorhouse Avenue and the intersection of Gasson Street / Madras Street / Moorhouse Avenue.
