A new fast-food chain has arrived in Christchurch, with Chicking opening its first South Island location on Colombo Street in Sydenham.
The international halal-certified fried chicken chain offers a variety of menu options, including fried chicken, burgers, wraps, and peri-peri chicken at lower price points than some of its competitors.

Founded in Dubai in 2000, Chicking has expanded to over 30 countries, including Australia, India, Malaysia, and the UK. The brand is particularly well known in the Middle East and Asia, where it has a strong following.
Unlike many fast-food chains, Chicking is entirely halal-certified.
This has made it popular among Muslim communities worldwide, but the company also markets itself to a broader audience looking for affordable fried chicken options.
The franchise first arrived in Auckland, where it attracted customers with its low-cost meals and halal menu.
The Christchurch store is the first in the South Island, expanding the chain’s presence in the country.

“We use halal chicken throughout our menu and we take pride in offering hand-cut halal chicken,” a Chicking representative said. “It has been really appealing to the Muslim community, but also to anyone looking for affordable fast food.”
On Friday, the restaurant’s opening day in Christchurch drew crowds, with customers eager to try the newest addition to Christchurch’s fast-food scene.
“For me as a student, it was really affordable,” one customer said. “And the taste? Very, very tasty.”
With a strong turnout on opening day, more locations across the city are being considered.
