Canterbury residents turned their eyes to the skies last night to catch a glimpse of Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS).
Many took the opportunity to capture the rare celestial event and shared their images with Chris Lynch Media.
The comet, which made its closest approach to the Sun earlier this month, was clearly visible across the region thanks to clear skies and minimal light pollution.
Discovered in April 2024, Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) has an orbital period of approximately 160,000 years, making this a truly unique event for skywatchers.
Astronomy experts have said the comet is now visible in the Southern Hemisphere’s evening skies and will not return for millennia.
The images shared with Chris Lynch Media show the comet’s glowing tail streaking across the sky, capturing the imagination of many across the region.
