A 19-year-old from Christchurch has won his professional boxing debut in Thailand.
Kwahli Beauchamp, three-time amateur New Zealand boxing champion, won the match on Sunday night in unusual circumstances against a last-minute opponent.
When Beauchamp was all set to fight, the promoter made a last-minute change to the fight with a much taller, bigger boxer.
Beauchamp, along with his father, trainer, and manager, Nort Beauchamp, accepted the challenge.
The opponent had a tight guard and a high advantage, but Beauchamp utilised every gap he could find and caused significant damage to his opponent’s body.
The fight ended with a second-round knockout caused by multiple body shots before the opponent fell to the ground.
A Beauchamp family spokesperson said, “Kwahli was so excited about his win that he forgot to take off his hand wraps until the post-fight feed.”
Beauchamp’s next professional fight will be in Christchurch at the end of the year.
