The Bridge Hill fire has grown to approximately 980 hectares following updated mapping this morning, and it remains uncontained and uncontrolled, according to Incident Commander Brian Keown.
“We have nine helicopters alongside three fixed-wing aircraft attacking the fire from the air, while 15 trucks, tankers, and support vehicles are fighting the fire on the ground,” Keown said. “The fixed-wing aircraft are using retardants to suppress the fire while our crews are working with heavy machinery on the ground. Crews are also continuing to protect huts and other structures in the area.”
Currently, 85 Fire and Emergency personnel are on-site, supported by an Incident Management Team and a Regional Coordination Centre based in Christchurch.
State Highway 73 remains closed
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is continuing to assess State Highway 73 with Waka Kotahi to determine when it will be safe to reopen. When it does reopen, it will likely be under traffic restrictions.
Community meeting for affected residents
A community meeting has been scheduled for impacted residents at 1 pm today at the Tawera Memorial Hall in Springfield, where updates and support will be provided.
The fire remains a significant challenge for crews as they work to control its spread and protect properties and infrastructure in the area. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow official advice.
