BREAKING: A large fire has broken out in Kirwee.

Emergency services were called to Old West Coast Road Just after 10PM.

The fire is near the Waimakariri River.

Police have blocked off the road.

There is zero visibility in the area residents say.

Evacuations are taking place.

A Fire Command Unit has been set up.

A Canterbury Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the fire was spreading quickly in windy conditions.

Crews are carrying out structure protection.

Police are evacuating some properties on Old Coast Road between Cooks Rd and Courtenay Rd.

“If you are outside this area but feel unsafe, then you are advised to self-evacuate the spokesperson said.
