A boil water notice remains in place for the greater Greymouth area, as the Grey District Council continues to investigate the cause of the recent contamination.

Council officials said they are in ongoing discussions with national water regulator Taumata Arowai after receiving further directives outlining what must be completed before the notice can be lifted.

While all water samples have returned clear since Thursday and no illnesses have been reported, the source of the contamination has yet to be confirmed. Council staff are investigating whether the issue stems from backflow—where water flows in reverse into the supply system—or from a possible broken pipe.

To support affected communities, the New Zealand Food Network is donating additional bottled water, which will be distributed across the greater Greymouth area. Details on distribution points are expected to be released later this week.

The Council thanked residents for their patience and co-operation and said staff are working hard to fully resolve the issue.
