A Maritime spokesman confirmed the incident. “Strait NZ Bluebridge ferry MV Connemara lost power in Cook Strait 3.7km south of Sinclair Head.

“Weather and sea conditions are moderate and the vessel drifted south away from the shore.

“There is no immediate danger to the vessel, the 88 people on board and the environment.

“Wellington harbour tugs have connected with  Connemara and are towing the ferry into Wellington Harbour.

“The Wellington Harbourmaster, the vessel’s Master and its operator are all working closely together.

Maritime NZ is actively monitoring the situation.”
