Antarctica New Zealand has launched a nationwide recruitment drive, calling for 40 people to join Scott Base for the 2025/26 research season.

The organisation is seeking a diverse team of engineers, tradespeople, field support staff, cleaners, cooks, mechanics, medics, and technicians to help run New Zealand’s Antarctic research hub. Most roles will run from August through to February, while 12 positions are available for those willing to endure the harsh isolation of the Antarctic winter.

A separate team of outdoor guides is also being recruited to support deep-field scientific expeditions in the wider Ross Sea region, with successful applicants offered comprehensive training before deployment.

While every role contributes to keeping Scott Base operational, Antarctica New Zealand says engineers and mechanics are in particularly high demand for the upcoming season.

Mike Shapland, General Manager for Antarctic Operations, said working at the base was like maintaining a ship—with equipment and technology ranging from vintage machinery to cutting-edge systems.

“We’re looking for a ‘Swiss Army knife’ team—people who are adaptable and handy in a tight spot,” Shapland said. “We need women and men from workshops around the country to answer this call.”

Shapland said supporting scientific research in Antarctica was an opportunity to contribute to vital global studies on climate change, wildlife, and fragile ecosystems.

“Joining the team at Scott Base means becoming part of something bigger than yourself,” he said.

Megan Nicholl, Antarctica New Zealand’s General Manager for People, said the crew is made up of people from all walks of life, but those who thrive in Antarctica share certain qualities.

“They’re level-headed, enthusiastic, and collaborative,” Nicholl said. “It helps to have some experience in isolated or remote environments. What really stands out is the camaraderie—the crew forms tight bonds and builds lifelong friendships with like-minded people.”

The recruitment drive comes as New Zealand’s Antarctic programme continues to play a critical role in international climate and environmental research.

Applications for the 2025/26 season close on 16 March 2025, with expressions of interest welcomed year-round for future roles.

More information about the available positions can be found at Careers | Antarctica New Zealand.

For those ready to brave one of the harshest environments on Earth, the opportunity offers not just adventure—but the chance to contribute to research that could shape the future of the planet.
