A man who died in a scooter crash on Brougham Street on Friday has been described as “an extraordinary person, who touched many lives.”

Daniel Liesy died after crashing his private e-scooter into a pole at the Brougham Street and Waltham Road intersection on Friday at about 11 PM.

He died at the scene, police said.

The German-born Christchurch resident had been living in New Zealand since 2019 and was from Brandenburg an der Havel, a town west of Berlin.

Friend Stephanie Hörnlein told Chris Lynch Media his family was “deeply distressed, shaken and was struggling to come to terms with this heavy loss.”

On a GoFundMe page, Daniel was described as having an “unwavering zest for life.”

“The well-being of his fellow human beings was always his top priority. Even on grey days, he always tried to see the good – he never gave up.”

“New Zealand was a great adventure for Daniel, full of new opportunities and possibilities. He met and fell in love with his caring partner Brenda, experienced many unforgettable journeys and moments, and made friendships both privately and professionally.”

“Yet, his heart always beat for his homeland, for his family, and for his friends. Our hearts are broken, the world stopped turning because YOU are missing, Daniel. How we wish we could hug you one last time, laugh together one last time. Life, as we know it, will never be the same again. And yet, we are full of gratitude for this shared time, which we will carry in our hearts for a lifetime. In our thoughts, memories, and stories, you will continue to live on.”

The family is trying to raise enough money through a GoFundMe page to return his body to Germany.

Hörnlein told Chris Lynch Media the family wanted to express ther gratitude to the first responders who tried everything to save Daniel’s life.
