Mike Asmussen, a founding member of Achilles Christchurch has passed away following a short but aggressive battle with cancer.

He was widely admired for his dedication to running and his ability to inspire others, both within the Achilles community and in the not for profit sector.

Mike, a visually impaired athlete, was a passionate runner who participated in Christchurch’s weekly Hagley parkruns with the help of his devoted guides.

He had aimed to reach 300 parkruns and came heartbreakingly close, completing 291.

Wearing his iconic yellow Achilles jersey, Mike competed in over 20 half marathons and achieved a personal dream when he completed the New York Marathon last year.

Chris Lynch Media had the privilege of meeting Mike on a crisp Sunday morning in October 2023, as he trained with unwavering determination for the New York Marathon. (video below)

His adventurous spirit also led him and his team to tackle trail races like the Oxford Odyssey.

Vanessa Gopperth, Mike’s running mate, close friend, and guide, paid tribute to his remarkable determination and warmth.

“As a long time friend and guide, we shared his hopes for Achilles in his last weeks while we kept training.

“Mike wanted you to get together with your family and friends and go for a run or walk in your favourite places or parkrun. Mike wanted you to have adventures, and laugh together on the trails. Mike wanted you to make more wonderful Achilles memories to go with the good ones you have of him.

Many of you have very fond memories of Mike. I look forward to sharing stories with you when we come together for our future Achilles sessions. In the meantime, take care of yourselves. Go for a run or walk, and remember the fun you had with our mate, Mike.”

Mike didn’t just love running; he loved the people it brought into his life. He faced every challenge, including his cancer diagnosis, with incredible strength and grace. Even when he could no longer run, walk, or be wheeled, his spirit never wavered.

Mike received his cancer diagnosis just a few months ago, but he and his guides continued running together for as long as possible.

Mike Asmussen served as the manager of Christchurch Community House, a facility that provides space and support for various not-for-profit organisations.(video below)

In memory of Mike, his family has asked for donations to Achilles Christchurch instead of flowers. The funds will help support athletes with disabilities and their guides to participate in running events across New Zealand.

Achilles Christchurch, a volunteer organisation, helps athletes with disabilities by covering race entry fees, as well as travel and accommodation costs for events outside Christchurch. Mike’s dedication and legacy will continue to inspire those within the Achilles community for years to come.

For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made through the Givealittle page set up in Mike’s honour.
