Selwyn District Council and Carter Group have reached a mediated agreement about rezoning land west of Dunns Crossing Road.

The rezoning will allow the construction of around 3500 houses over the coming years.

Selwyn is the fastest growing district in the country and demand for new houses remains extremely high,” says Mayor Sam Broughton.

“Our council wants to ensure that future growth is planned responsibly and sustainably and the Government expects us to have 30 years of zoned land available for development. As well as housing being provided through this development, we expect Government investment into its responsibilities for infrastructure for a growing community including education, policing, public housing and health services. This is in line with Minister Bishop and Minister Brown calling for growth to pay for growth.”

Mayor Broughton says the council wants to ensure Selwyn will remain an affordable and attractive place for current and future residents.

“That will require some new typology in our housing stock beyond the three-bedroom, double garage homes that are already abundant in our district.”

To avoid additional pressure on the existing roading network, site works on the State Highway end of the rezoned area will not start until the roundabout at the intersection of Dunns Crossing Road with SH1 have started.
