Authorities are still investigating a fatal crash in Clarkville, Canterbury, that claimed the lives of two people.
Inspector Peter Cooper said the victims were a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl.
“While the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, early indications suggest that high speed played a role in the vehicle colliding with a power pole,” Cooper said.
Police are working closely with the victims’ families and have expressed their condolences during this difficult time.
Some homes lost power following the crash, which happened just north of Christchurch.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said crews were initially called to reports of an explosion and, upon arrival, confirmed a car had struck a power pole, bringing powerlines down onto the road.
A third person, the driver, was taken to hospital.
