In a remarkable story of perseverance, a much-loved Border Collie, who went missing in the wake of a fatal accident on Lewis Pass, has been found and joyfully reunited with his owner.
The horrific crash unfolded on the afternoon of June 2nd at Shale Peak Stream Bridge, situated approximately twenty minutes inland from the Hanmer Springs turn-off.
Hailey Palmer, her partner, and their baby survived the crash uninjured despite their ute flipping upside down and landing on a bridge barrier.
But their Border Collie who was travelling with them slipped out of his collar and ran away from the smashed ute.
The driver of the other car involved was reported to have been driving erratically moments before the fatal collision and did not survive the crash.
Dog tracker Donald Schwass who runs the Nelson Search Dog/Tracking Facebook page contacted Ace’s family after seeing their story on Chris Lynch Media.
In the harsh freezing conditions, Don and his son would get up at 2AM, searching for Ace.
Armed with drones, specialised equipment, and fortified by years of expertise gleaned from Don’s professional experience, their relentless pursuit continued with a remarkable ending.
Ace was reunited with his owner Culverden resident Hailey Palmer late on Wednesday night.
Hailey said she was shocked.
“It doesn’t feel real that he’s at home with us! He’s a bit nervous but very excited to see us, he’s off to the vets as a precaution but he seems fine! No major injuries anyway.”
The heart-warming moment was captured on video.
Ace is crying with happiness as he hugs his owner while his tail wags fast.
