Fire and Emergency crews were called to the scene of a large fire in Hoon Hay.
They were called to Pennylane Child Care Centre on Hoon Hay Road just before 6PM Friday.
Southern Communications Fire and Emergency Shift Manager Alex Norris said there were four appliances at the scene working to control the fire.
He said when the first crews arrived, the building was ablaze.
Initially, Fire and Emergency crews from Spreydon Fire Station and Central City were called.
However, after receiving multiple calls from the public, crews from Wigram and Ilam Stations were also called to help.
There were still four crews at the scene as of 7.20PM.
Road closures were in place, and the public was advised to avoid the area.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from many parts of Christchurch.
