At least 40 jobs could go under a proposal by City Care to restructure its Christchurch operations.
The Christchurch City Council-owned infrastructure company operates two business; City Care Water and City Care Property.
Chief Executive of City Care Property Peter Lord told Chris Lynch “City Care Civil was incorporated into the Property business in late November 2020.”
Civil-related services have been reviewed “to ensure operations are aligned with business priorities and direction within an increasingly competitive and challenging market.”
“As a result, there will be change to the Civil business, this includes potential redundancies.”
The Civil business includes project management services, landscape maintenance and construction, road surfacing, maintenance and construction and traffic management services.
Mr Lord said the company is in the process of working with impacted staff and unions.
“If required, we will seek redeployment where we can to other parts of City Care, voluntary redundancies in the first instance where possible for surplus staff, and a selection process if needed where voluntary redundancy or redeployment do not match our required reduction numbers.
Our goal is to limit the impact on individuals as much as we can and provide a range of support measures for those that elect to go or unfortunately are required to leave City Care.”
In an email to staff on Friday, Peter Lord said “all members of the team who are potentially impacted by the proposed change have been involved in discussions and have all been invited to provide feedback on the proposals. Feedback closes on 24th May and at that point we will assess all submissions with a final decision to be made on 28th May.”
“It is always a very difficult time when a business has to go through this process. It is hard on every single member of the team but obviously hardest for those immediately impacted. I ask that we all show consideration, over the coming weeks, for those team members impacted.”
