The Interislander ferry service was delayed following concerns about a dangerous goods container.

A Kiwirail spokesman told Chris Lynch the Picton Ferry Terminal and rail yard was temporarily closed at 2am due to a possible chemical leak from a customer’s dangerous goods container.

He said the emergency response plan was activated and the area was cordoned off to ensure no harm until the leak was further investigated.

Fire and Emergency also responded to the incident.

“After a thorough check of the container and consultation with the customer, it was determined everything was safe and normal operations resumed at 7.30am.”

The Kiwirail spokesman said Aratere and Valentine were running to schedule this morning.

Kaiarahi was delayed overnight due to the incident.

The Kaiarahi 8.45am sailing out of Wellington was expected to depart this afternoon.

Customers booked on Kaiarahi were being contacted directly to provide them updates he said.
