The Christchurch City Council has closed the Groynes Reserve Dog Park for the remainder of the weekend until further notice.

It follows the death of a 2-and-a-half-year-old Labrador.

Other dogs are reported to have been sick after visiting the park, which is off Johns Road.

The dog’s owner Aimiee told Chris Lynch she was walking Chief on Wednesday the 18th at 10AM and he became sick at 3pm and passed 3.30pm.

“We are not blaming the Groynes, it’s an amazing park.”

“But we just wanted other people who have dogs to be aware as besides being at home the Groynes is the only place we go and we have turned our place upside down – but nothing.”

In a statement, the Christchurch City Council said it was currently investigating the situation and the park was closed for extra precaution.
