The Government has spent more than $25 million on emergency housing in Canterbury over the past two years, with several motels earning more than a million dollars.
The figures were released to Chris Lynch Media under the Official Information Act.
Ministry of Social Development Group General Manager Housing Karen Hocking said demand for housing across New Zealand is growing and more people are experiencing a severe and immediate need.
“This demand is generated by a shortage of affordable housing driving up house prices and rents.
People on low incomes are most affected by rising housing costs and many seek financial help through the Ministry.”
The Ministry pays the accommodation supplier and assistance is generally granted for up to seven nights but can be extended depending on individual circumstances.
The Government spent $25,411,100.48 in Canterbury during the period from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2022.
