Christchurch residents can expected a higher police presence in the city on Wednesday, because of a gang related funeral.
Residents have already reported a procession on Hills Road and Bealey Avenue.
One motorist said “it took up both lanes of Manchester Street, heading north. Cops just watching and filming them doing nothing.”
Another said a several gang members drove through red lights on Bealey Avenue.
It’s understood the tangi is for Chad Puru, a 55-year-old from Christchurch, who was found dead at the gateway of a property on Dalbeg Rd, 10km from Amberley, North Canterbury, about 10am on Tuesday.
His body was found inside a burnt-out car. It’s believed he did not suffer any burns.
Police initially said his death was unexplained. but confirmed earlier this week, it was not considered suspicious.
A police spokesperson said “there is a tangi occurring and there have been a number of people come into the area from out of town.
“There will be a visible police presence in the central city to provide community reassurance and ensure everyone’s safety.”
